Consumer Logic

Consumer culture is changing in the United States for the better, due to our depressed economy and a raised awareness of the effects of our overly consumeristic culture. These days, consumers are making conscious decisions about what they actually need as well as considering the quality and production methods of the items being purchased.

I noticed this trend when I began selling handmade wooden rings on Etsy.com. The rings became popular for younger couples looking for alternatives to the traditional engagement and wedding rings. These were socially aware individuals who rejected mainstream "values" and were seeking objects that truly represent their own unique values. I really connected to this idea, because after chasing someone else's dream for so long, I, myself, was determined to carve a life that was as unique as I am. In a way I was consuming, not a physical object, but a value, an ideal.
